Children’s Emotional Burden of Displacement (Second Polish Republic – Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – New Zealand)

Abstract

New Zealand, a highly developed nation, demonstrated remarkable humanitarianism in 1944. Despite its geographical distance from Poland, it welcomed over 800 Polish refugees, predominantly children orphaned by World War II. This paper examines the profound emotional impact of displacement experienced by these young Polish citizens between 1939 and 1945. It explores their struggle to maintain their cultural identity, language, and religious practices during their deportation to the USSR and subsequent journey to New Zealand via Iran. The analysis draws upon poignant testimonies from former child refugees who resided in the Pahiatua camp, sourced from various interviews, publications, and documentaries.
