Abstract

A sculpture depicting Christ Crucified was identified as originating from the church of St Michael the Archangel in Lublin (formerly the parish church of St Michael the Archangel). This identification was made during conservation work and examination of the object. Józef E. Dutkiewicz dated the object to between 1320 and 1370, which was subsequently confirmed by specialist conservation research, including technological analysis, tomography, and dendrological and dendrochronological studies. The archaic form of this piece is a valuable addition to the corpus of medieval sculpture, complementing the sparse surviving furnishings of St Michael the Archangel Church and its unique design. The archaic form of the monument is an interesting addition to the medieval sculpture and the few surviving furnishings of St Michael the Archangel Church from its early period. The small-scale sculpture of the Crucified Christ is simple and austere in form, yet unusual in its expression, depicting Christ in a state of torment, yet also conveying peace and contemplation. Despite the passage of 700 years since its creation, and the changes in aesthetic values and the sculpture’s physical condition, its expressive power remains evident.
