The Commission of National Education and Patriotic and Moral Upbringing

Abstract

This article examines the approach of the Commission of National Education (1773-1794) to patriotic and moral upbringing in Poland. The Commission played a significant role in developing the national and religious consciousness of the Polish nation. It established nationwide school curricula and recommended textbooks. Its guidelines for Polish language instruction emphasised correct usage in speech and writing, and promoted the reading of works by eminent authors. In the areas of moral and legal studies, it taught that just laws, grounded in natural law, guarantee social order and the well-being of all social classes. In the natural sciences, it fostered an appreciation for the beauty of the Polish landscape, presenting it as a source of solace and peace, as well as sustenance and prosperity for the nation.
