Emotions in the Quran: The Meanders of Fear in Sura VIII Spoils of War (Al-Anfāl)

Abstract

Sura VIII, “Spoils of War” (Al-Anfāl), is traditionally believed to have been revealed in connection with the Muslims’ victory in the first battle fought by the Medinans against the Prophet Muḥammad’s enemies from Mecca (Badr, 634 CE). Consequently, it is among those chapters of the Quran that extensively address warfare, which invariably evokes both positive and negative emotions in the warring factions. Within this sura, the concept of fear manifests through four root verbs conveying this meaning: (1) w-q-y / t-q-y, (2) w-ǧ-l, (3) f-z-ʿ, (4) ḫ-w-f, and (5) r-h-b. This study focuses on cases 1 and 5, as these meanings are associated with broader religious and political contexts. The analysis will be transdisciplinary, employing traditional Quranic hermeneutics, elements of translation studies, and political science, an approach successfully utilized in my previous research.
