Emotions in Politics and Culture: A Paradigm Shift from Modernity to Postmodernity

Abstract

Throughout history, humanity has experienced a succession of paradigms that have shaped our understanding of the world and human interactions with it. In the West, these paradigms can be broadly categorised as: the faith paradigm, grounded in religious beliefs and dogma; the progress paradigm, which emphasises continuous improvement through reason and science; and the development paradigm, focused on individual economic growth. This article analyses how the paradigm shift from modernity to postmodernity has affected the perception of emotions in politics and culture. It highlights the increasing significance of a holistic approach that contrasts with the traditional scientific method (T.S. Kuhn, M. Foucault). This shift not only redefines the understanding of emotion but also emphasises the convergence of science and art as a mutually enriching approach to studying emotions in political and cultural contexts ( J.-F. Lyotard, Z. Bauman, R. Shusterman, F. Jameson, A. Damasio).
