Operations of the US Consulate General in Warsaw in September 1939: A Report by Consul John Ker Davis

Ryszard Żelichowski

Abstract

On September 21, 1939, the second and final evacuation of lower-ranking diplomatic personnel and foreign nationals from German-besieged Warsaw took place. US Consul General John Ker Davis played a pivotal role in these events, which he detailed in a report to the US Department of State. The report, covering the period from September 5 to September 28, 1939, is one of the few surviving documents from the American diplomatic mission in Warsaw dating to the outbreak and early days of World War II. This article presents the document, previously unpublished in Polish, accompanied by the author’s critical commentary.
