An Individual’s Information Security in Interpersonal Relationships: An Overview of the Issue

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine and outline the significance of information security (IS) mechanisms for an individual’s social functioning within a network of diverse interpersonal relationships (IR). Upon closer inspection, the IR landscape is filled with challenges stemming from personality traits, communication strategies, and communication barriers, as well as the attitudes, intentions, and goals of individual IR participants. This gives rise to numerous relationship configurations that place the individual in a privileged, yet often problematic, position. Therefore, the IS perspective should be viewed as an organizing framework for both private and interactive information spaces, building information resilience and, ultimately, through situational awareness, shaping an individual’s informational agency and interpersonal effectiveness. This perspective serves as an increasingly important prerequisite for security and well-being in the contemporary world.
