The Role of the Educational Environment in Decision-Making in the Biographies of Incarcerated Men

Abstract

This article examines the role of the educational environment in the life choices made by individuals and in the rehabilitation process of incarcerated persons. This issue is examined based on the biographies of two convicted men. Interviews with them were used to analyze their life paths prior to their incarceration, which made it possible to identify the factors contributing to their committing criminal acts. The life experiences of the convicts, their family relationships, and activities during their incarceration were also presented. The men came from intact families, did not cause any disciplinary problems during their childhood, and demonstrated a passion for sports and learning. During their studies in higher education and adult education programs, they participated in events that decisively altered their future lives.
