Towards a (Not-Quite) Unified Real-Virtual and Offline-Online Reality: Some Remarks on the Contemporary World of Everyday Life

Abstract

Since the 1990s, the social world has been analyzed through three dimensions of reality: the physical, the social, and the virtual. Within these dimensions, the online subworlds that surround and are co-created by individuals occupy a significant position. Because of the dynamic development of information and communication technologies (ICT), these dimensions increasingly interpenetrate and merge. This article draws attention to a critical theoretical and methodological nuance in contemporary everyday life resulting from the overlap of two taxonomies of reality: the first comprises physical, social, and virtual reality, while the second is composed of objective, subjective, and intersubjective reality.

Keywords:

real subworld, virtual subworld, offline, online, objective reality, subjective reality, intersubjective reality, everyday life
