Women in the “Republic of Babin”

Abstract

This article explores the mechanism of self-presentation among women within the Republic of Babin (Rzeczypospolita Babińska, 1601–1677) who spoke candidly at the table in male company. Their humorous narratives, preserved in the so-called Babin Records (rejestry babińskie), reveal the diverse ways in which these women perceived their world while illustrating the social standing of women within the patriarchal reality of the seventeenth-century Polish nobility (szlachta koronna). This presence was remarkably limited; of the 413 recorded anecdotes, only seven were attributed to women. The content of these narratives portrays the authors as individuals with strong personalities who frequently defied conventional stereotypes. Notably, most of these anecdotes (four) were written by Protestant women during the tenure of Jakub Pszonka, a Reformed Evangelical, as the head of the Babin Commonwealth. This correlation suggests a link to the Reformation’s influence on elevating the role of women.
