Gustaw Olizar’s Trip to Italy as a Formative Experience and the Source of His Later Marital Crisis, as Reflected in His Diaries and Alojzy Feliński’s Letters

Abstract

This article analyzes Gustaw Olizar’s trip to Italy as a formative experience that indirectly influenced his later marital crisis. The primary sources used are excerpts from Olizar’s diaries and selections from Alojzy Feliński’s letters written between 1818 and 1820. The use of descriptive and comparative methods allows for a comparison of the autobiographical interpretation of events with the moral commentary of the author’s mentor. The analysis shows that the trip to Italy was not the direct cause of the dissolution of the marriage, but it created the conditions for decisions and relationships that led to later conflicts. Particularly significant was the marriage to Karolina de Molo, which took place during the stay in Italy, and the resulting cultural and social tensions. The study reveals the ambivalent nature of elite travel at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, combining a formative function with the potential to destabilize private life.
