The folk style in 17th pastoral carols by Jan Żabczyc (with a case study of “Symfonije anielskie”)

Cecylia Galilej

Abstract

The aim of this article is a review some typical linguistic and stylistic features of 17th pastoral carols, which establish a specifi cation of this genre. Pastoral carols are not authentic folk texts. They were written in educated church environments. The early baroque poet Jan Żabczyc is thought as a father of this genre in polish literature. A part of his literary production shows a imitation of folk language by using for example the same fable scheme, dialogue, monologue, a creation of the characters, attempts of polonisation of Naitivity Scene, folk model of versifi cation. The Żabczyc’s pastoral carols were very popular more than three centuries and two of them (Przybieżeli do Betlejem pasterze, A wczora z wieczora) are still alive.
