The genesis of the Presidential institution in the Russian Federation

Angelika Mielniczuk

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the process of the formation of the Presidential institution as an innovation in Russia’s political heritage in the times of its political transformation which were characterized by a great deal of controversy. The office of the President of the Russian Federation has no tradition as it did not occur in any earlier political forms of the state. It is a brand new political institution that has been introduced as a state authorities’ governing body, firstly in the last years of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), then in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). This institution was formed to create a strong centre of power capable of reviving Russia’s statehood, it gained its final, strong shape thanks to the creation of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
