The Politics of Emotion: Javier Milei’s Discursive Strategy in Argentina’s 2023 Presidential Campaign

Abstract

The 2023 Argentinian presidential election witnessed the victory of a politician promising radical change in political and economic policies. This article examines Javier Milei’s discursive strategy during the campaign, contextualised within Argentina’s economic crisis and multifaceted social challenges. It analyses the specific characteristics of his political image and discourse during his pursuit of the presidency. Employing historical methods and discourse analysis, the study reveals Milei’s pre-election narrative as a manifestation of ‘anti-politics’ – an emotion-driven populist rhetoric that constructs an image of ‘anti-system’ sentiment and advocates for libertarian reforms. The primary conclusion highlights the effectiveness of this strategy amidst the accumulating catalysts of social discontent in Argentina in recent years.
