“Prison is an academy for the Turkish elites,” writes in his book Can Dündar, journalist, author of books and documentaries, until 2016 editor-in-chief of the newspaper Cumhuriyet, currently the most famous Turkish political émigré in Germany, publisher of the #ÖZGÜRÜZ portal and columnist for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit. His prison notes are a testimony to the repression of the few opposition media in Turkey as well as demonstrating to the German reader the extent of authoritarian rule in Turkey. Dündar’s book includes many motifs typical of prison literature, among them reflections on his own emotions under conditions of isolation and imprisonment. With these reflections in mind, the question should be asked not only about the political aspects, but also about the manifestation of different emotions in non-fiction.
