Education Overshadowed by War: Emotions Surrounding the Activities of Post-2022 Russian Centres in Germany

Abstract

This article examines the controversy surrounding Russian state-funded cultural institutions in Germany following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It analyses the extent to which these institutions are subject to Kremlin influence and the nature of public criticism directed towards them in Germany. Furthermore, the article explores how these centres shape historical and cultural understanding amongst their participants. Drawing on Zheng Wang’s definition and typology of historical memory and the principles of civic education in Germany, the article employs a mixed-methods approach. This involves quantitative and qualitative analysis of materials related to four Russian cultural centres (partly funded by the Russkij Mir Foundation) in Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, and Hamburg.
