The Influence of Religious Factors on the Content and Manner of Oaths Taken by Polish Civil Servants at the Dawn of Independence and during the Second Polish Republic

Abstract

This article examines the extent to which religious factors influenced the wording of oaths taken by Polish civil servants, as well as the procedures surrounding the oath-taking ceremony, both on the eve of Poland’s regaining independence and during the Second Republic. It analyses relevant legal acts issued by the Regency Council of the Kingdom of Poland, and subsequently by sovereign Polish authorities in 1918-1919, concerning the formulation and procedures of oaths of office, including draft legislation that was not ultimately enacted. By discussing these regulations, the article demonstrates the degree to which legislators and drafters considered religious aspects in  the content of oaths taken by Polish state officials during this period, and the evolution of theirinfluence on the associated ceremonial practices.
