When a Political Scientist and an Anthropologist Observe Memory and Its Emotions: About Agency, the Polish Language and Contemporary Pondering over the Past

Abstract

This article reflects on the relationship between Polish linguistics and indigenous memorialist thought, examining the historical and emotional significance of memory in Poland as contained within both. Through a transdisciplinary dialogue between linguistics, cultural anthropology, and political science, the text constructs an expansive field of analysis. Within this field, the interplay between Polish memory(ies) and history(ies) is observed, with particular attention to the significance of this relationship for emotion, language, and identity. A psychological perspective underpins these considerations, through which memory and its associated emotions are viewed not only as exhibitors of historical meanings and tools of political discourse, but also as mechanisms for adapting to and interpreting challenging historical experiences.
