The Russia of Elisabeth I and Peter III in the Light of the Correspondence of the Marquis of Almodóvar (1761–1763)

Abstract

In June 1761, Pedro Francisco de Luján y Suárez de Góngora, Marquis Almodóvar, the minister plenipotentiary of the Spanish monarch Charles III of Bourbon, arrived in St Petersburg. His mission initiated permanent diplomatic relations between Spain and Russia, which had previously been maintained sporadically. Marquis Almodóvar stayed in St Petersburg during the Seven Years’ War, closely observing the reigns of Elizabeth I, Peter III, and Catherine II. He witnessed significant political events, such as the death of Elizabeth and Peter’s assumption of the throne, Russia’s alliance with Prussia, and the palace coup that resulted in Peter III’s abdication and Catherine II’s coronation. He meticulously described all events he witnessed or learned about and dispatched information to Madrid that might be of interest to the Spanish court. Thanks to Almodóvar’s correspondence, distant Russia became better known in Spain, which is its core value.
