The Automated Mind. Is the Development of New Technologies Weakening Our Cognitive Abilities?

Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of smartphone addiction as a neurobiological, psychological, and social phenomenon. It discusses the impact of excessive mobile device use on brain function, including structural and functional changes in areas responsible for memory, attention, cognitive functions, and emotional regulation. The study highlights the association between intensive smartphone use and mental health deterioration, including increased stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. Particular emphasis is placed on FOMO and nomophobia as key social mechanisms reinforcing addiction. The final section presents effective therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, physical rehabilitation, and mindfulness techniques, which may support the treatment process. The article adopts an interdisciplinary perspective and underscores the need for further research and public education on digital hygiene.
