CHURCH AND SCHOOL – ABOUT THE ASPIRATIONS OF POLES IN THE LUPENI PARISH ROMAN CATHOLIC IN TRANSYLVANIA TO PRESERVE THE NATIVE LANGUAGE IN MULTIETHNIC SOCIETY

Abstract

The Roman Catholic parish in Lupeni was established in the last decade of the 19th century as a miners’ and coal mine workers’ initiative. They had been coming from different parts of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. In the parish, from the same beginning of its existence, Hungarians dominated over Poles. Some significant concessions towards Polish believers were made only during the Romanian period. The aim of the article is to present Polish activity within parish of the Roman Catholic Church in Lupeni in multi-ethnic Transylvania from the end of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. The research assumptions were aimed at searching for answers the question of how Polish parishioners in the Roman Catholic Church in Lupeni strived to preserve Polish culture and language in the community which were strongly influenced by Hungarians and Romanians? To present the issue the source material, including Hungarian and Romanian literature, was submitted
for qualitative analysis.
