The Covid-19 pandemic as a catalyst for surveillance and social control processes
Abstract
The work is devoted to the analysis of the impact of pandemic on intensification of the surveillance, monitoring and control processes and in consequence,on the condition of the democratic state, its citizens and the global order. Modern technology offers almost unlimited possibilities of control, observation, supervision, also in the democratic countries. The world has gained new tools of exercising power. This concerns both micro-social relations, relations between the citizens and formal and non-formal actors of power, as well as interstate relations and the influence on the state of the most powerful supranational actors. Improving the techniques of public surveillance of the society is also accompanied by changes in the law hat promote the restriction of civil rights and freedoms. The epidemic and the announcement of a pandemic has rapidly accelerated these processes. The pandemic threat has become a catalyst for a change the system of international forces and further concentrating power and wealth, the destruction of traditional communities and values, limiting of democratic freedoms, the imposition of a unified culture, the strengthening of the state’s central or informal supranational power,, building a much more efficient system of invigilation than it is today, the subordination of society and the introduction of authoritarianism and perhaps even totalitarianism on a global scale.
