The Beginnings of Polish Settlement in Texas in the Second Half of the 19th Century

Abstract

The article attempts to present synthetically the history of the establishment of the first Polish settlements in the United States of America. This history is connected with economic emigration from Upper Silesia and Opole Silesia, starting from 1854. The reasons for the emigrants seeking better living conditions outside their home country were poverty and the news about a better existence which had reached them from the USA. The main initiator of the migration was Father Leopold Moczygemba, a Conventual Franciscan friar who had worked in Texas since 1852. The first Polish settlement in Texas was the village of Panna Maria, founded in 1854. There was also a significant Polish presence in other places. At the end of the article, the author draws attention to the great significance of the Catholic Church and the clergy for Polish migration and assimilation overseas.
