Tadeusz Zaremba (1895-1964): An Urban Architect of Zamość. A Biographical Sketch as an Introduction to Research

Abstract

Tadeusz Zaremba (1895-1964) is an extremely important figure for the history of Zamość. Although he came from Cracow, he settled in Zamoyski’s town already in the 1920s. For almost 20 years he served as Zamość’s urban architect, restoring historical beauty to the most important buildings of the Old Town complex. He bitterly fought against all unauthorised renovations and illegal additions, which disturbed the town’s architectural order. He was also a popular designer of villas, manor houses, residential houses, and public buildings. His drawings from the inter-war period show his predilection for the manor style in particular. Of special importance to a reconstruction of his biography are the sources in the State Archive in Zamość, as well as in other archives and museums. Despite the architect’s great services to the ideal city, he has not lived to see his biography. This article is an introduction to a work devoted to Zaremba that is currently being written.
