Unknown Italian Ornithological Illustrations from the Collection of Rudolf II. Preliminary Discussion of Cod. Min. 24 from the Austrian National Library

Abstract

This article examines the album Naturstudien (ÖNB, Cod. Min. 24), which contains 226 depictions of birds bound together with seven sheets of natural history illustrations. The article provides a description and a preliminary iconographic and genetic analysis of the album. A comparison of Naturstudien with other ornithological illustrations from the end of the 16th century suggests that its identification in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library) catalogue as a German work created around 1600 is incorrect. Although the binding is Czech, the illustrations were created in Italy in the 1570s and 1580s. A comparative analysis of watermarks, techniques and composition, and even the selection of the drawings themselves, indicates quite clearly that the Naturstudien album was created in a workshop in Bologna associated with Ulisse Aldrovandi, probably the same one as the A.1211 album from the Biblioteca di Archiginnasio. It is possible that Aldrovandi sent them to the imperial collections in return for drawings copied for him from the library of Emperor Rudolf II.
