Tadeusz Zaremba was a prominent architect in interwar Zamość. As municipal architect from 1934 to 1956, he oversaw the restoration of the Old Town’s historic character, uncompromisingly opposing unauthorised renovations and additions that detracted from the city’s architectural beauty. One of his adversaries was Waldemar Kranz, who was also involved in architectural projects. The well-documented dispute between Kranz and Zaremba, which occurred in the mid-1930s, is recorded in the press and archival documents. Kranz accused Zaremba of fraud, forgery, and acting out of personal revenge to the detriment of private individuals and the public interest and neglecting his official duties. The case was investigated by various authorities, including the ministry and the public prosecutor’s office. Based on source analysis, this article reconstructs the course of the dispute.
