The heyday of the estate in Czarnokońce Wielkie (Podolia) coincided with the management of these assets by Erazm Wolański of the Przyjaciel (Friend, Amicus) coat of arms and his wife, Matylda Jaxa-Dobek. Wolański established an English horse stud, a distillery, and a mill, providing employment for numerous residents. This article presents the history of his most significant initiative—the foundation of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary in Czarnokońce Wielkie—and his subsequent attempt to establish a parish, which was only realized after Wolański’s death by his widow, Matylda Wolańska. The existing literature on the subject provides virtually no information about the church. The history of the foundation of the church, which was intended to become the ancestral mausoleum of the Wolański family, and the complicated history of the parish’s establishment, can only be learned by consulting archival sources. The location chosen by Wolański for the church foundation can be interpreted in a religious or charitable context, but also as part of the tradition of erecting mausoleums near family residences.
