Volunteering as a Subject of Pedagogical Research

Katarzyna Braun

Abstract

This article analyzes volunteering as an area of pedagogical research. The introduction discusses the substantive and formal subject matter of pedagogy, placing the phenomenon of volunteering in this context. It outlines the definitions, origins, functions, and values of volunteering and provides an overview of pedagogical research on the subject. This research focuses on three main areas: descriptions of the phenomenon, its underlying ideas, history, and the motivations of volunteers; research on volunteers of different age groups, including personality profiles, motivations, social skills, and the importance of volunteering for educational and professional development; and research on the role of volunteers in supportive, educational, developmental, and resocialization activities in institutions such as schools, kindergartens, hospices, hospitals, and prisons. The article highlights the importance of volunteering for shaping pro-social attitudes, developing competencies, and supporting social integration processes. The article also emphasizes the lack of long-term and comparative research, which opens up opportunities for further study.
