Religious and Ethical-Moral Attitudes of Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic Teachers in Folk Schools in Galicia in the Period Before Autonomy (in the Light of the Directives of the Church and Orthodox Authorities)

Roman Pelczar

Abstract

This article aims to present the milieu of teachers working in elementary (folk) schools in Galicia. The source base for this study consists of printed sources and thematic literature. The subject of detailed analysis is the religiosity and morality of teachers who lived and worked in various local environments. Teachers played a crucial role not only in the education of children but also in their upbringing. The article draws attention to the various factors influencing these activities. This aspect of teachers’ professional work was particularly important for the diocesan authorities of the Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic Churches, who prohibited teachers from engaging in improper religious and ethical behavior. Consequently, the ecclesiastical authorities prepared various orders and instructions for them, in which they stipulated their expectations of this professional group.
