The Musical Preference Orientation Scale (SOPM): Initial Development and Psychometric Properties of the Tool

Abstract

This article presents the process of constructing and preliminarily validating the Musical Preference Orientation Scale (SOPM), designed to assess the musical preferences of adolescents. It was assumed that musical preferences are multidimensional and serve important developmental and regulatory functions. Based on a review of the literature and empirical research, a set of items was developed addressing various areas of adolescents’ musical experiences. The study was conducted among 666 secondary school students. The structure of the tool was determined using exploratory factor analysis, and its reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. Additionally, an analysis of fit with Rentfrow and colleagues’ model of musical preferences was conducted using Tucker’s factor fit index. The results confirmed the four-factor structure of the SOPM and the scale’s satisfactory psychometric properties. The tool can be used in both scientific research and music education practice.
