Single Motherhood in Exile – Challenges and Adaptation Strategies of Mothers: A Qualitative Study of Ukrainian Women Living in Olsztyn

Abstract

This article describes the everyday challenges faced by single mothers who are refugees from Ukraine, alongside the adaptation strategies they employ. The empirical analysis is based on selected findings from a focused group interview conducted in December 2025 with a group of seven mothers who found refuge in Olsztyn following the outbreak of full-scale war in Ukraine. The experiences of the participants show that refugee status leads to a major reorganization of family life and a redefinition of maternal roles. The mothers in the study fulfill caregiving, parenting, professional, and organizational roles while operating in a state of constant tension and a perpetual lack of time. Under these conditions, they develop various coping strategies at both the individual level (reorganizing work, holding multiple jobs, diversifying sources of income, and investing in professional development) and the group level (creating informal support networks).
