Disease Acceptance and Personal Assistance Needs Among Adults with Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Abstract

This article analyzes the degree of disease acceptance and personal assistance needs among adults with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). A quantitative study, conducted using a diagnostic survey method, examined 35 adults diagnosed with SMA between the ages of 25 and 60. The Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS), adapted by Z. Juczyński, and an original questionnaire regarding daily functioning and the need for personal assistance services were used for data collection. The results indicate a low level of disease acceptance, with functional status serving as a key factor differentiating the level of acceptance among respondents. Participants report significant difficulties in leading an independent life and a high need for support in the form of personal assistance – both at home and outside the home – to enhance the autonomy, social participation, and quality of life of adults with SMA. Consequently, the findings underscore the need for systemic development of personal assistance services and for training assistants to work with individuals with SMA.
