The Archive in Zamość was one of 52 poviat-level branches of the Voivodship State Archives established in 1950. The article discusses the changes that took place at the institution over 70 years. For the first 25 years it was part of the Voivodship State Archive in Lublin. In 1976, the Voivodship State Archive in Zamość was established, which now operates under the name of the State Archive in Zamość. At the time of its foundation, the archive took over a modest stock of records, including those of the Gubernial Government from 1810-1874 and of the Town Council of Zamość. At present it holds over 280,000 items (2534 runnig metres of records), including the collections of well-known personalities and experts on the region: the Czernicki family, prof. Jerzy Antoni Kowalczyk, Prof. Bonawentura Maciej Pawlicki, Dr Krzysztof Czubara, and Dr Wojciech Białasiewicz. The archive runs an Internet Archive Gallery, conducts publishing, educational and promotional activities, and digitises its collection. The author also discusses the archival traditions of Zamość, where in the Old Polish period documents were collected by four institutions dependent on the Zamoyski family: the Zamoyski family entail, Zamość Academy, Zamość Chapter, and the local municipal archive. At present, the oldest records of the Zamoyski family entail, Zamość Academy and the religious institutions are stored, among others, in the National Library in Warsaw, the diocesan archives in Lublin and Zamość, and the State Archive in Lublin. Documents related to Zamość are also found in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Austria, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Sweden.
