Calles Law as a basis for the Cristero War

Krystian Chołaszczyński

Abstract

On June 19, 1926, President Plutarco Elias Calles published a document that went down in history as the Calles Law (Ley Calles) and consisted of 33 articles. The document came into force on July 31, 1926 and in practice it sanctioned the anti-clerical constitutional provisions of 1917. It is recognized that this document was the ignite spark and the reason for the Cristero War. The presidential decree was to be nailed to the door of all Mexican temples. Between the release of the Calles Law and the beginning of Cristero War was only six months - very restless. Hence the thesis that the normative act issued by Mexican President Calles was the direct cause of the Cristero War.
