Abstract

The modern history of the Republic of Zimbabwe is closely related to the person of Robert Mugabe. He was a First Prime Minister and Second President. Since 1980, which means since independence, for the next 37 years, Robert Mugabe had an influence on what happens. His authoritarian rule is referred to as Mugabeism. The result was a permanent crisis that continues to this day. Although Robert Mugabe was overthrown in 2017, and he died in 2019 the decisions taken by him, further, to affect Zimbabwe. Several factors influenced the foreign policy of the Republic of Zimbabwe. The process of decolonization itself should be considered the most important. The Rhodesian crisis had a decisive influence on the shape of politics in the independent state. It should not be forgotten that Zimbabwe’s elites were forged during the Cold War. Colonization resulted in a partial erosion of traditional clan-tribal structures. The void was replaced by political formations which most often sought support in communist parties. Despite the fact that Zimbabwe never adopted communism, the form of operation of the main political party is similar to the large donors from the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China. It is not surprising that Robert Mugabe is sometimes described as a Maoist. The aim of the article is to present the main directions of the foreign policy pursued by Robert Mugabe and is only a contribution to further research.
