The Educational and Formative Role of Art in the Family

Abstract

This article discusses the influence of classical education and art on upbringing within the family. The essence of classical education is to guide a person toward intellectual and spiritual perfection, defined in Western tradition by the word kalokagathia – the attainment of beauty and goodness that represents the goal of human formation. This education begins within the family, is deeply connected to upbringing, and extends to social life. Art, as a medium for moral formation, reveals truths about the world, good and evil, and guides humans toward catharsis (through experiences of pity and fear) and metanoia – directing the will toward a love of the good and a rejection of evil. The formation of young people through art also involves a process of the sublimation of feelings, in which mothers and elders play a major role in the family. It is emphasized that art requires criticism and evaluation in terms of truth and morality, a function that in Latin civilization belongs to authorities – most often to fathers in the family, guided by the virtue of piety. Attention is also drawn to the danger of moral intellectualism and the need to complement acquired knowledge with moral training, the practice of good, and the cultivation of virtues.
