Under the black and yellow flag. Soldiers of the Czech nationality in the ranks of the Austro-Hungarian army and their attitude in the fights on the eastern front 1914‒1917

Jan Wiśniewski

Abstract

The behavior and morale during the battle of the soldiers from the Czech nationality on the Eastern Front did not differ from the overall level of Austro-Hungarian troops. However the cases of the Czechs desertion has overgrown legends about the alleged subjecting soldiers Czech nationality in mass to Russian captivity and unwillingness to fight against the Russians. It was not entirely consistent with the truth. The fact is that there were cases of desertion and the transition of the Czechs to the Russians, but they never took on the mass character. However these cases were intentionally underlined, broadly commenting in the press and appropriately presenting to the social opinion of the dualistic monarchy, and this led to Anti-Czech aversion, especially visible among Hungarians, Poles and Austrians themselves. The Austrians were willing to blame for their own mistakes in commanding on the Eastern Front precisely the soldiers of Czech nationality.
