Strikes in April and May 1988

Abstract

The article discusses the strikes that took place in April and May 1988. Their cause was the price increase introduced by the government. The largest strike actions took place in the Huta im. Lenina in Krakow, in steelworks in Stalowa Wola and in Gdańsk Shipyard. The strike in Krakow was speeded up, the other two strike actions expired, because the government did not negotiate with the workers. In spite of this, the strike actions carried out in the spring of 1988 were an important step on the way to a political compromise in Poland, concluded in 1989.
