Transmitting the Truth about Concentration Camps as an Element of Patriotic Education

Magdalena Gajderowicz

Abstract

The existence of concentration camps, places marked by human death and suffering, is one of the darkest chapters in the history of Poland and of the world. While it was Germans who established concentration camps in different parts of Europe, the designation “Polish death camps” seems constantly to return in the media. This expression is unacceptable and usually sparks scandal. In the face of such misinformation, refuting lies and disseminating the truth is an obvious necessity. Broad education efforts are needed. The article distinguishes three areas in which historical knowledge should and can be transmitted, namely: in the home, at school, and in the former concentration camps as memorial sites. Education on all of these levels guarantees that distortions regarding the Polish nation will be avoided (at least in Polish society), which is the least we can do within the framework of patriotic education. It seems indispensable to bring up the subject, as it may inspire people to reflect on their values and make them more empathic.
