Writing the Region in the Work of Janina Perathoner “Weneda”

Abstract

Janina Perathoner “Weneda” – teacher and writer – was the author of parahistorical prose focusing on the Konin region. Her texts brought to life historical and legendary figures. She planned to write a history of Konin and the surrounding area through the ages. Her works are mainly historical, including the novels Zmierzch chwały (the history of the Kwilecki ducal family), Doktor Zemelius (a quasi-biography of Jan Zemełka), and Zofia Kamila (a novel based on the life of writer Zofia Urbanowska). Weneda’s last book, Zapomniany Mocarz, is a fictionalized biography of Stanisław Staszic – patron of the school she worked at all her life. Her didactic mission did not end when she retired, influencing successive generations of readers.
