Travel, historically understood as the search for one’s identity and place of belonging, has been redefined due to contemporary socio-cultural transformations. The culture of transparency, which has become a major trend in popular culture, widens the reality available to people by eliminating social and physical barriers. As a result, the number of events and amount of information available to the mobile society through new media increases exponentially. This generates information overload, causing frustration, i.e. Fear of Missing Out (fomo). This syndrome is defined as the inability to participate in all events or to keep track of all the information, while feeling unsatisfied and unhappy about one’s life. At the very core of Fomo lies the image of limitless attractive possibilities available in the mobile, transparent society. Events distant in time and place, now approachable, define the Fomo sapiens – the traveller who, using mobile technologies and media, can be everywhere all the time in an effort to combat his Fear of Missing Out. Such a person tries to find their identity, while at the same time being afraid of commitment, perceiving every choice through lost possibilities and constantly looking for new experiences.
