Promoting the Idea of Abstinence in Poland in the Interwar Period as an Expression of Patriotism

Outstanding Abstinence Activists and Their Anti-Alcohol Activity

Abstract

The phenomenon of alcoholism in the 1920s was one of the most important social problems that adversely affected Polish people. Poles tried to fight it in many ways. A number of initiatives were launched to reduce drinking. Between 1918 and 1939, famous and respected Poles undertook a series of activities aimed at reducing drunkenness. In secular and sobriety publications, they stressed the important role of abstinence in Polish society and warned against the consequences of intensive drinking. At that time, the idea of abstinence was propagated by Paweł Gantkowski, Rafał Radziwiłowicz, priest Jan Kapica and priest Michał Sopoćko.
