Biographistics in the Service of the Civic Education of Society

Chances and Threats on the Example of Selected Figures from the History of Opole in the Polish People's Republic

Abstract

Knowledge derived from research on the biographies of various historical figures can and should play a very important role in the process of the civic education of society in a broad sense. The educational functions of biography can be fulfilled with the help of such means as popular historical publications, particularly those addressed to young people, the funding of monuments or commemorative plaques and appropriate regulations concerning the naming of streets and other public places. It is extremely important for all initiatives in this field to be based on reliable historical research on individual characters. Unfortunately, it is not always the case. Selected historical figures are often idealised and their cult is more or less artificially created based on a selective use of historical information in particular. A glaring example of this is the extreme idealisation of certain characters from the recent history of Opole.
