Prof. Elżbieta Smułkowa – the first ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Minsk
Abstract
The article is devoted to prof. Elżbieta Smułkowa, an outstanding Polish Slavist, former head of the Department of Belarusian Philology at the University of Warsaw and the Department of Belarusian Culture of the University of Bialystok, the first ambassador of the Republic of Poland in the Republic of Belarus. Smułkowa was born in 1931 in Lviv. Her childhood was interrupted by World War II: her father was murdered by the Soviet authorities, and young Elżbieta, together with her sister and mother, came to Siberia. In 1941, the family returned to Poland and settled in Toruń. After graduating, Smułkowa devoted herself to scientific and diplomatic work. Her work at the diplomatic mission in Minsk was associated with the flourishing of Polish-Belarusian relations, Her merits in the field of science and diplomacy were appreciated by the Polish authorities: in 2005 at the hands of President Aleksander Kwasniewski Smułkowa received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland - Polish state decoration, awarded for outstanding achievements in the field of science, culture, social activity, state service and the development of good neighborly relations with other countries.
