The Secondary School in Michałowo (1947–2017) Located on the Polish -Belarusian Border in the Biographies of Its Teachers and Students

Abstract

The particular character of the foundation and management of the Secondary School in Michałowo consists of the unique nature of the place where it was established as a community initiative of teachers and parents soon after the end of World War II. Before the war, Michałowo was a small town with Jewish, German, Polish and Belarusian population. After the war, there were almost no Germans and Jews left there. There was only a group of enterprising pre-war teachers who managed to set up a secondary school in a town that was not even a seat of the local administration. It was a really rare phenomenon at that time.

The involvement of the first headmaster Antoni Stasiewicz led to the construction of the school building on the site of the former evangelical church. One of the founders of the school was also Arseniusz Ziniewicz, a pre-war activist and Belarusian teacher, who then taught the language at the school for many years to come. The school was mainly attended by the local rural youth of Belarussian origin and Orthodox religion. Thanks to the education they received there, many of its students later became successful headmasters (Tamara Soloniewicz), journalists (Mikołaj Hajduk) and artists (Aleksy Pawluczuk). The seventeenth anniversary of the school celebrated in September 2017 was an opportunity to sum up the school's achievements. A book has also been published to commemorate this event.
