Isidore Treatise ‘De Ortu et Obitu Patrum’: A Compendium of Biblical Information and a Christian’s Vademecum of Conduct

Abstract

Isidore of Seville’s work On the Lives and Deaths of the Fathers (De Ortu et Obitu Patrum) contains biographies of outstanding biblical figures ranging from Adam to Titus. As stated in the title and in the introduction, the author describes the ancestry (ortus), characters, virtues and achievements (vita), and circumstances surrounding the deaths and burials of the biblical heroes (obitus), including patriarchs, judges, kings, prophets, Lord’s apostles and pupils. His descriptions tend to praise the heroes, depicting them as persons worthy of being imitated. Isidore strives not only to consolidate and complete the readers’ knowledge of the Holy Scripture, but also to show them how to live in the way the famous biblical heroes lived, serving God and trusting Him. The treatise once again proves Sevillian to be a great teacher and tutor of generations of European readers.
