The article concerns the concepts of vocation and authenticity in the thought of Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset. Reflections on these two concepts are preceded by a synthetic description of Ortega's original views on the characteristics of human life and its fundamental difference from the life of animals. Then, I try to present the extremely important role that vocation plays in the philosophical system of the Spanish thinker and I look for an answer to the question of whether discovering one's own vocation can be a source of breakthrough in life. It turns out that such a breakthrough is not only possible, but even, according to Ortega's concept, may occur many times during the life of an individual. The last part of the article is devoted to philosophical problems and ambiguities related to vocation and authenticity. These doubts result from the fact that Ortega himself did not leave clear answers to issues related primarily to the problem of intersubjectivity and the universality of vocation.
