Maria Skłodowska-Curie

From a Life Drama to a Second Nobel Prize

Abstract

This article is about Maria Skłodowska-Curie, and in particular about the changes that took place in her life due to the sudden death of her husband, Pierre Curie, in 1906. The author analyzes how this tragic event changed Marie's personality, her attitude towards the world, herself and scientific work. She also examines the impact of this change of identity on the decision to take over the chair of physics at the Sorbonne and continue research on radioactivity. This decision was a turning point in the life of the researcher, which became the driving force for her scientific career, leading her to the second Nobel Prize and opening the door to the world of science for women.
