The Sonorism of the Place in the Educational Biographies of Outstanding Krakow Musicians

Abstract

The article addresses the problem of the role of the category of place in the formation of musical excellence, its experience by talented instrumentalists, as well as memories of creation and action in specific Krakow spaces. The research was inspired by analyzes related to the sound landscape of cities created by R. Tańczuk and R. Losiak, but the main focus was on identifying the relationship between the place (in urban, institutional and personal terms) and forms of artistic improvement. A unique image of Krakow as a place of development of musical excellence was provided by a qualitative analysis of 11 semi-structured interviews with recognized instrumentalists. The adopted biographical method and the procedure of its interpretation allowed for the creation of a metaphorical map of the sound of Krakow, the sonorism of this city, seen through the eyes of the respondents - from the description of those places that were associated with the initiation and choice of a musical path, to the spaces of professionalization and building a creative profile. The research also made it possible to determine the important function and meanings given by the musicians to individual points in Krakow, which resulted from their urban and institutional characteristics, as well as personal experiences. For most musicians, staying in Krakow, participating in the cultural life of the city and activities related to music were the fulfillment of personal aspirations and youthful dreams, and was also an important factor stimulating development, helping the artists to reach the next stages on the way to their unique excellence.
