(Re)reading Thomas Merton’s for Pedagogy

(Re)gained Narrative Contexts in Thinking about Man

Abstract

The attitude and reflection of famous monk, Thomas Merton, has particular importance in pedagogy. It is the example of a thinker who is vulnerable to the world, to its risks and pitfalls, who is speaking up out of concern for those who cannot cope with them. The discovery of extraordinary humanism in the works of the hermit Merton is an inspiration for reading alternative narratives (aside from the canon of “mandatory” works) for a responsible understanding of the processes of upbringing and education. Merton’s afterthought is an excellent example of concern about the fate of a man and by taking advantage of wisdom of this type of thoughtfulness coming from culture is worth taking into account in pedagogical thinking.
